Ruzhany Palace

Ruzhany was the principal residence of the Sapieha family, one of the great houses of the Grand Duchy, built from the late sixteenth century as a fortified palace and rebuilt from the 1770s by Jan Samuel Becker into a classicist complex with a main block, a theatre, an orangery, and curving arcaded wings running out to a monumental entrance gate. The family lost it after the 1831 uprising, it became a textile works, and it burned in 1914 and again in the Second World War. What stands are ruins: the gate range and one wing have been reconstructed and hold a museum, while the main palace remains a shell with its portico columns standing.

History

Ruzhany began in the late 16th century as the castle of Lew Sapieha, with the palace completed in 1602, and was the main seat of the senior Sapieha line until it was wrecked in 1700 by the forces of Michał Serwacy Wiśniowiecki in the strife within the Grand Duchy. Aleksander Michał Sapieha rebuilt it in the 1770s as a grand Neoclassical residence by the Saxon architect Jan Samuel Becker, set in an English park with a theatre of 1784-1788 and an orangery; the Sapieha estates were confiscated after the uprising of 1831, the palace became a textile mill, and factory workers set it on fire by accident in 1914 (Wikipedia, Ruzhany Palace).
