Kosava Castle

The Puslowski palace at Kosava was built from around 1838 in a romantic neo-Gothic manner, a long symmetrical range with twelve towers said to stand for the months of the year and over a hundred rooms, set in a park with terraces and ponds. It was stripped in the nineteenth century, damaged in the First World War and burned in the Second, and stood as a roofless shell for decades. Reconstruction began in the 2000s and has progressed in stages, with parts of the building reroofed and opened while others remain shells, so what a visitor sees depends on when they come. The manor house where Tadeusz Kosciuszko was born stands nearby, rebuilt as a museum.

When to go

May to September for the park and the fullest access; opening depends on which sections are complete, so check before travelling. Winter hours are reduced.

Before you go

The building is a work in progress and much of it remains unrestored and closed. What is finished is new work rather than original fabric. Interpretation is limited. The park is only partly recovered.
