The church at Budslau was built between 1767 and 1783 in the late baroque manner with twin towers and a wide facade, incorporating an earlier chapel of 1643 with a carved wooden altar. It holds the Budslau icon of the Mother of God, given to the Bernardine friars here in the sixteenth century and venerated since, and the pilgrimage that gathers around it each year on the first weekend of July draws tens of thousands of people, many walking for days from across the country to arrive for the night vigil and the open-air Mass. That celebration, the Budslau fest, was inscribed on the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list in 2018.

What you actually see

  • The baroque church - the twin-towered basilica and its interior.
  • The Budslau icon - the venerated image at the high altar.
  • The 1643 carved altar - the earlier wooden altarpiece within the church.
  • The July pilgrimage - the gathering listed by UNESCO.

When to go

The first weekend of July for the pilgrimage, which is when the site is at its fullest and most striking; accommodation in the area is impossible then and most pilgrims camp. May to September otherwise for an ordinary visit.

Honest expectations

Outside the July pilgrimage the church is quiet and the village small. During the pilgrimage the area is overwhelmed with no accommodation and improvised facilities. It is a working church and services take precedence.

Nearby

Myadzyel and Lake Narach lie northwest; Minsk is south.
