Harrison's Cave

Barbados is a coral limestone island, and rainwater has spent a long time dissolving its interior into caverns. Harrison's Cave is the showpiece: a system of chambers with flowing white formations, stalactites meeting stalagmites into columns, pools of clear water and a waterfall falling inside the rock. It is visited by electric tram along a route through the caverns with stops to walk, which makes it accessible to almost everyone. The site was rediscovered and developed in the 1970s after being known and forgotten repeatedly through the island's history.

History

The caves are first mentioned in documents of 1795, and were rediscovered in the early 1970s by Jack Peeples. The government developed them with a tram tour, and they opened to the public in 1981 (Wikipedia, Harrison's Cave).

When to go

Year round and completely weather-proof, which makes it the standard rainy-day option. Cruise-ship days fill the tram slots, so booking ahead matters. The cave holds a constant cool temperature that feels excellent after the coast.

Before you go

It is a developed attraction rather than a wild cave - the tram, lighting and commentary are polished and it can feel packaged. Photography from a moving tram is difficult. Tours book out in season and walk-ups are often turned away. Those wanting something rawer should look at Welchman Hall Gully or the smaller Animal Flower Cave instead.
