Getting thereBoat from Rangamati across Kaptai Lake, about an hour
EntrySmall site fee; boat charges

Shuvolong is a stream that comes off the hills and falls into an arm of Kaptai Lake about an hour by boat from Rangamati, dropping around thirty metres in the wet season into a pool at the water's edge, so the approach is by boat and you arrive at the foot of it. Flow depends entirely on rain: through and just after the monsoon it is a genuine fall, and by the middle of the dry season it can be reduced to a trickle down wet rock. A small market and a few stalls have grown at the landing. The boat trip across the lake between forested hills is a substantial part of the outing, and the same trip usually takes in a hanging bridge and one or two other stops.

What you actually see

  • A fall dropping to the lake - water off the hills straight into the reservoir.
  • Arrival by boat - the only access, an hour across the water.
  • The lake crossing - forested hills and channels on the way.
  • The landing market - stalls at the foot of the fall.

When to go

July to October for the water, during and after the monsoon; the dry season leaves very little. Half a day including the boat. Boats are hired at Rangamati and prices are negotiated.

Honest expectations

In the dry season it is barely a waterfall and many visitors are disappointed. Boat prices are negotiated hard. Litter at the landing is a problem. Hill tracts permit rules for foreigners apply.

Nearby

Rangamati is across the lake; Kaptai lies south.
