Nydri Waterfalls

A stream falling from the Skaroi hills has cut a narrow gorge behind Nydri, and a path follows it inland for about twenty minutes from the parking area, crossing the water on stones and wooden bridges under plane trees. The main fall drops into a pool deep enough to swim in and cold enough that most people manage only a minute; a second smaller fall lies a short scramble above. The walk is easy and short, which makes it the standard non-beach excursion for visitors staying on Lefkada's east coast, and it is busiest in the middle of the day when boat-trip passengers come ashore. Flow depends heavily on the season: strong after winter rain, reduced to a trickle by late August.

• The main fall - water dropping into a cold pool in a narrow cleft.
• The gorge path - a shaded walk along the stream with small bridges.
• The upper fall - a smaller cascade reached by a short scramble.
• The plane trees - dense shade over the whole route.

When to go

April to early July for reliable flow; by late summer the falls can be disappointing. Mornings avoid the day-trip crowds. Winter rain makes the stones slippery.

Honest expectations

The walk is short and the falls modest, so visitors expecting a major cascade will be underwhelmed, especially in August. The path is stony and gets slippery near the pool. Parking near the entrance is limited.
