Poysdorf

Poysdorf calls itself the wine capital of the Weinviertel and has the acreage to support it, sitting in the largest wine region in Austria with Grüner Veltliner as the dominant grape. What is distinctive is the Kellergasse: outside the town, sunken lanes are lined on both sides with small press-houses, each with a cellar dug back into the loess behind it, built in rows because the loess holds a tunnel without lining and keeps a steady temperature. Whole streets of these stand with no dwellings among them - villages of buildings nobody lives in. The Vino Versum in the town covers wine, viticulture and the local history with a museum and tasting. The region is flat and the cycle routes run between villages and their Kellergassen.

Honest expectations

Kellergassen are private property - cellars open only on set days or by arrangement. The Weinviertel is flat and quiet with few other attractions. A car helps considerably.
