The Kitzsteinhorn is the glacier mountain above Kaprun, and a chain of gondolas and cable cars runs from the valley to a summit station just above three thousand metres. At the top a platform looks south into the Hohe Tauern, with the Grossglockner visible when the air is clear, and a tunnel gallery runs through the rock with windows cut toward the ice. Snow lies here into summer, and the ski season runs from autumn through spring rather than in the usual winter window. The glacier has pulled back visibly over recent decades, and the bare rock and moraine below the ice make that easy to read from the platforms.

What you actually see

  • The summit platform - a deck just above three thousand metres looking south over the Hohe Tauern peaks and glaciers.
  • The gallery tunnel - a passage driven through the rock with openings cut toward the ice and the valley.
  • The glacier surface - crevassed ice below the station, with pisted runs on it through the cold half of the year.
  • The retreat evidence - scoured rock, moraine ridges and meltwater below the present ice edge.

When to go

June to September for walking, long views and open platforms. Autumn to spring for snow, when the lifts fill with skiers and the queues are longest at weekends. Check the webcams first: cloud sits on the summit often, and a whiteout at the top costs the same as a clear day. Mornings are usually the better bet.

Honest expectations

The full lift ticket is expensive and non-refundable if the summit is in cloud. It is properly cold and windy up there in any month, and the thin air makes stairs harder than expected. The summit area is concrete, tunnels and viewing decks rather than wilderness, and it gets crowded when a ski day and a coach tour coincide.

Nearby

Kaprun sits below, with Zell am See and its lake ten minutes away.
