The Brunnenmarkt

The Brunnenmarkt runs the length of Brunnengasse in the sixteenth district and is usually described as the longest street market in Vienna. It is a working market rather than a display one: crates of vegetables sold by weight at a shouted price, cheap fruit late in the day, Turkish bakers, Balkan butchers, olives, spices, cloth, kitchen goods and household plastic. Prices sit noticeably below the Naschmarkt's and the crowd is local. At the top end the street opens into Yppenplatz, which is quieter and lined with places to sit, and where growers from Lower Austria sell direct at a farmers' market on Saturday mornings.

What you actually see

• The vegetable stalls - sold by the crate and the kilo, cheapest in the last hour of trading.
• The Turkish bakeries - flatbread and pastries coming out through the morning.
• Yppenplatz on Saturday - the growers' market at the top of the street.
• The side streets - grocers, spice shops and butchers filling the blocks on either side.

When to go

Monday to Saturday, mornings into the afternoon, closed on Sundays and public holidays. Saturday is the fullest day and the only one with the farmers' market on Yppenplatz. Come early for choice or late for the discounting. Summer afternoons are hot and there is very little shade anywhere along the street.

Honest expectations

It is loud, crowded and physically tight, with delivery vans pushing between the stalls. Little English is spoken and prices are sometimes quoted differently to obvious outsiders, so watch the scales. Much of the produce is ordinary wholesale stock rather than local or seasonal. Cash is expected at most stalls, and there is litter by the end of the day.
