Sydney Fish Market

Sydney Fish Market handles the catch from across New South Wales and beyond, running a Dutch auction each weekday morning in which prices fall until a buyer bids, a system that has operated at the market since the 1980s and moves thousands of crates before most of the city is awake. Behind the auction floor is the public side: retailers selling whole fish, prawns, oysters, bugs and sashimi, with counters cooking to order and tables outside on the water. Guided tours take visitors onto the auction floor at dawn. The market is best known nationally for its trading marathon before Christmas, when it stays open for thirty-six hours straight and enormous crowds come for prawns.

History

Sydney's first fish market opened at Woolloomooloo in 1871, the fishing fleet's mooring place, and a private Southern Fish Market at Redfern followed in 1891, its trade threatened by a city rule that all fish be inspected at Woolloomooloo; the council took over the Woolloomooloo market around 1907-1908. The market stood on the Blackwattle Bay shore at Pyrmont from 1966 until 2026, when it moved to its new building at Glebe (Wikipedia, Sydney Fish Market).

Year-round; go early, since the best selection is in the morning and the market closes mid-afternoon. Auction tours run on set weekday mornings and book out. The pre-Christmas trading marathon is spectacular and chaotic in equal measure.

Good to know

The outdoor tables are notorious for aggressive seagulls and ibis. Prices are not especially cheap for retail buyers. The market moved on 19 January 2026 into a new building at the head of Blackwattle Bay in Glebe, beside the old Pyrmont site, and the light rail stop once called Fish Market is now Bank Street, so older directions are out of date. Parking is limited and busy.
