Murramarang National Park

Murramarang runs along about forty kilometres of South Coast between Batemans Bay and Ulladulla, backed by tall spotted gum forest that grows almost to the sand. Its reputation rests on the kangaroos: at Pebbly Beach, eastern greys have long grazed on the grass behind the beach and often on the sand itself, close enough to photograph without effort, which has made the spot widely known. Beyond that, the park holds quiet beaches, the Murramarang South Coast Walk along the shore, headland lookouts, and Aboriginal middens recording long occupation by the Yuin people. Camping areas at Pebbly, Depot and Pretty beaches book out in holidays.

When to go

September to May for swimming and camping; the park is mild year-round but winter water is cold. School holidays fill campgrounds, which must be booked. Kangaroos are most active early morning and late afternoon.

What to expect

Feeding the kangaroos is prohibited and harmful, and animals that have been fed can become aggressive. Some access roads are unsealed and rough after rain. Vehicle entry fees apply, and the popular beaches are far from empty in season.
