Mindil Beach Sunset Market

The Mindil Beach market runs on Thursday and Sunday evenings through the dry season, from late April to late October, and it is the closest thing Darwin has to a civic ritual. Stalls sell food reflecting the city's Southeast Asian connections, Thai, Malaysian, Indonesian, Filipino, Timorese and Sri Lankan, alongside crafts, didgeridoo players, fire twirlers and whip crackers. The point, though, is the beach: at sunset, crowds carry their food across the sand, set up chairs and watch the sun drop into the Timor Sea, which it does directly out to sea from here. The market closes for the wet season, when storms make an outdoor evening impractical.

The market runs only two evenings a week and only half the year, which catches visitors out. Swimming at Mindil Beach is unsafe because of marine stingers and crocodiles. Parking is difficult and the market is crowded.
