Hermannsburg was founded in 1877 by German Lutheran missionaries who walked cattle overland from South Australia, and its whitewashed stone buildings, church, school, smithy and manse, survive as a precinct now run by the Western Arrarnta community. Its significance is largely artistic: Albert Namatjira was born here in 1902 and learned watercolour painting from the visiting artist Rex Battarbee in the 1930s, going on to national fame and founding a school of central Australian landscape painting that continues in his family and community. The precinct holds a gallery of Hermannsburg work, the historic buildings, and a tea house serving apple strudel from the mission's German recipes.

What you actually see

  • The mission buildings - whitewashed 1877 church, school and manse.
  • The Namatjira connection - the gallery and story of the watercolour school.
  • The Hermannsburg potters - contemporary community ceramics on display.
  • The tea house - German-derived baking in the old mission precinct.

When to go

April to September; summer is very hot. The precinct opens daily with reduced hours in the hot months and closes for community reasons at times. Combining with Palm Valley or the West MacDonnells makes a full day.

Honest expectations

The mission history is complex, involving both protection of Western Arrarnta people and the imposition of a European order, and the presentation addresses this only partly. Alcohol restrictions apply in the community. Opening can be irregular.

Nearby

Palm Valley and Finke Gorge lie south; Alice Springs is east.
