Bondi Beach

Bondi is the most famous beach in Australia, a crescent of golden sand and rolling surf just a few kilometres from central Sydney, and the beating heart of the country's beach and surf culture. Backed by cafes and a lively seaside suburb, patrolled by iconic lifeguards, it is a place to swim, surf, sunbathe and people-watch, and the start of the beautiful clifftop Bondi to Coogee coastal walk.

History

The Bidjigal, Birrabirragal and Gadigal peoples lived here for tens of thousands of years, leaving paths, rock carvings and shelters, and in 1809 the road builder William Roberts received a land grant in the area. Edward Smith Hall and Francis O'Brien bought 200 acres including most of the beach in 1851, O'Brien opened it to the public as a picnic ground and amusement resort, and after he threatened to close it, it became a public beach in 1882; the tram arrived in 1884 and the first surf bathing sheds in 1903. By 1929 some 60,000 people came on a summer weekend day and 200,000 attended the opening of the pavilion, and on 6 February 1938, Black Sunday, large waves swept bathers off a sandbank, drowning five and leaving more than 250 to be rescued (Wikipedia, Bondi Beach).

When to go

December to March, the Australian summer, for the warmest weather and swimming, though it is busiest then; spring and autumn are pleasant and quieter. The coastal walk is lovely year-round.

Good to know

It is very popular and crowded in summer, especially at weekends, with limited parking. The surf has strong rips, so always swim between the red-and-yellow flags where lifeguards patrol. It is a scene as much as a beach, so those seeking quiet sand may prefer the many other Sydney beaches.
