Pueblo Liebig

Pueblo Liebig grew around a factory opened in 1903 by the Liebig's Extract of Meat Company, which processed cattle from the Argentine plains into meat extract and, later, corned beef shipped across the world, including to the armies of both world wars. The company built a complete village for its workforce: brick houses graded by rank, a hospital, school, club, sports fields and a hotel for visiting managers, laid out in a British industrial pattern that survives almost intact. The factory closed in the 1980s and its enormous sheds now stand empty beside the river, part of an industrial heritage site that shares a UNESCO listing bid with the related Fray Bentos works across the water in Uruguay. Guided tours enter parts of the works.

What to look for

• The factory sheds - the vast riverside plant, now silent.
• The company village - brick housing graded by employee rank.
• The social buildings - hospital, school, club and sports grounds.
• The river frontage - the wharf where product left for the world.

When to go

April to November for comfortable walking; summer is hot and humid. Tours run on a limited schedule, often only at weekends and by prior arrangement, so check before travelling. The village can be walked freely at any time.

Practical notes

Much of the plant is unsafe and closed, so tours cover a fraction of it. Without a guide the visit is a walk past empty buildings with little interpretation. Services in the village are minimal.
