Mussulo is a long sand spit that closes off a lagoon south of Luanda, effectively an island reached by boat in half an hour. The lagoon side is flat calm and lined with palms, jetties and weekend houses, and the ocean side is open Atlantic with surf. It is where Luanda goes to get out of Luanda, so it is busy at weekends with beach clubs, restaurants and boats, and quiet during the week.

When to go
May to September is the dry season and the most comfortable. Weekends are crowded and boat prices rise; weekdays are much quieter. The rains from October to April bring humidity and storms.
Honest expectations
Prices at the beach clubs are very high, in line with Luanda generally. Boat operators overcharge visitors and agreeing a price before boarding matters. Litter on parts of the spit is a serious problem.
