EntryFree; camps and lodges charge

Cabo Ledo is a headland about two hours south of Luanda where a long left-hander peels off the point into a wide bay of sand backed by red cliffs. On a good swell the wave runs for several hundred metres, which is what brought surfers here and keeps a small scene going with camps along the beach. Even without surf it is one of the better beaches on this coast, and the drive down is straightforward by Angolan standards.

What you actually see

  • The point break - a long left-hander running off the headland.
  • The bay - a wide sweep of sand backed by red cliffs.
  • The surf camps - a handful of simple places to stay along the beach.
  • The cliffs - red rock walls behind the northern end of the bay.

When to go

April to October brings the most consistent swell and is the surf season. The water is warm year round on this stretch. Weekends bring Luanda crowds to the bay.

Honest expectations

The wave needs a decent swell and flat spells are common. Facilities are limited and camps are basic for what they charge. There are no lifeguards and the current off the point is strong.

Nearby

Barra do Kwanza is north towards Luanda, and Miradouro da Lua is on the same road.
