Beni Add Caves

The Beni Add cave near Ain Fezza was formed in the limestone of the Tlemcen mountains and is among the larger developed caves in North Africa, with a public route of several hundred metres through chambers of stalactites, stalagmites, columns and flowstone, lit and fitted with walkways and steps. It was opened to visitors in the 1990s and is one of the main excursions from Tlemcen, busy at weekends and holidays with families. The system continues well beyond the section that is open, and parts remain unexplored. The temperature underground stays cool and even, which makes it a standard summer trip from the city below.

When to go

Year round; busiest in summer and on holidays. Two hours. Tours run in groups and queues build at weekends. Bring a light jacket.

Things to know

Lighting is coloured and the presentation is dated. Interpretation is minimal. Steps are wet and slippery. Weekend crowds move through in large groups with little time to look.
