EntryFree; guesthouses and guides charged

Valbona sits in the Accursed Mountains of northern Albania, a wide white riverbed of stones running between limestone peaks that rise abruptly on both sides, with guesthouses scattered through the valley in farming hamlets. Getting there is part of the appeal: the standard route runs by ferry the length of Lake Koman, a flooded gorge often compared to a fjord, then up the valley by road. From Valbona, the classic walk crosses a 1,800-metre pass to the village of Theth in about six to eight hours, one of the best-known day hikes in the Balkans, with guesthouses at both ends transferring luggage for walkers.

What you actually see

  • The Valbona to Theth pass hike - the classic day crossing of the Alps.
  • Lake Koman ferry - the flooded gorge crossing on the way in.
  • The white riverbed - the wide stone bed beneath the peaks.
  • Mountain guesthouses - family-run stays with home cooking in both valleys.

When to go

The pass hike is generally safe and snow-free from around mid June to early October; outside that window snow makes it a mountaineering route. July and August are busiest, with guesthouses full and the trail steady with walkers. September brings cooler air and thinner crowds.

Honest expectations

The pass crossing is a real mountain hike - steep, rocky, six to eight hours, with no facilities in the middle beyond a seasonal cafe. Trainers are not adequate footwear. Guesthouse bookings matter in peak weeks, and cash is essential since cards are rarely accepted. The Koman ferry has fixed departures and vehicles need advance space. Roads in the region are rough and journeys take longer than maps suggest.
