Mount Korab

Korab reaches 2,764 metres on the ridge that forms the border between Albania and North Macedonia, and it is the highest point in both countries, a broad limestone and schist massif rather than a sharp peak, with high pasture, karst hollows and long views into both. The standard Albanian ascent starts from Radomire above Peshkopi and takes a long day up and back, or better two with a camp, climbing through pasture and scree to the summit ridge. Snow lies late and returns early, giving a short season. The Korab waterfall on the approach, which drops in a series of steps when the snowmelt is running, is the other feature of the route. Shepherds use the high pastures through the summer.

When to go

June to September; snow makes it a winter mountaineering route outside that. Two days with a camp, or a very long single day. A guide is advisable and border formalities may apply on the ridge.

Honest expectations

It is a long ascent with significant height gain and no infrastructure. The border runs along the summit ridge and crossing it is a legal question; take advice. There is no rescue. The road to Radomire is rough. Weather changes fast.
