The ethnographic museum at Kruja occupies the Toptani house, built in 1764 inside the castle enclosure and lived in by the same family until the twentieth century, and it is shown as a working household rather than as a display of objects in cases: the olive press, the water system, the loom, the storage rooms, the kitchen, the guest rooms with their carved ceilings and low seating, and the workshops where the family made what it needed. About sixty percent of the objects are said to be original to the house. Guides take visitors through room by room explaining the arrangement, which is the value of it, since the point is how a household of that period actually functioned rather than what it owned.

What you actually see

  • An olive press in the house - the working equipment in place.
  • Carved ceilings in the guest rooms - the formal spaces of the household.
  • The water system - the supply and storage arrangement inside the building.
  • Workshops and looms - where the family made what it used.

When to go

April to October; winter opening is reduced. One hour. Guided visits are the norm and the guide makes the difference. Mornings before the Tirana tour buses arrive.

Honest expectations

It is small and an hour covers it. Tours are given in Albanian and English of varying quality. It is busy with groups in the middle of the day. The ticket is separate from the Skanderbeg museum next door.

Nearby

The Skanderbeg museum is in the same enclosure; the bazaar runs below.
