The cultural history museum in Mariehamn runs from the earliest settlement of the archipelago through the Viking period, the Swedish centuries, the Russian era after 1809 and the settlement of 1921 that gave Åland its autonomy under Finland while keeping Swedish as its language. The building it shares with the art museum was designed in the 1970s. The demilitarisation of the islands is covered directly.

When to go
May to September is the main season with full hours. Winter hours are reduced and it closes on some days. Rainy days fill it up.

The permanent display is dated in places. Labelling is mainly in Swedish with some English. Two to three hours is the whole of it.
