Chimanimani National Park

Chimanimani is a walking park: there are no roads inside it, and everything beyond the base camp is reached on foot over quartzite ridges and through valleys of montane grassland and forest patches. The range rises to over two thousand four hundred metres on the border and the rock is pale and folded into dramatic shapes. A mountain hut and caves serve as shelter, and the Bundi valley in the middle is the usual objective.

When to go

April to October is the dry season and the walking window. The rains bring flooded rivers and difficult ground. Nights at altitude are cold in any season.

Practical notes

Everything is on foot with all supplies carried; there is no road access inside the park. The cyclone of 2019 caused severe damage in this district and infrastructure has been slow to recover. Weather changes fast at altitude.
