Lusaka National Park

Lusaka National Park opened in 2015 on the edge of the capital, a fenced block of miombo woodland of some forty square kilometres stocked with white rhino, zebra, giraffe, eland and various antelope, created mainly so that people in Lusaka and school groups could see game without travelling to the distant parks. It is small and the animals are managed, which makes it a different proposition from Kafue or Luangwa, but the rhino are genuinely there and reliably found.

What you actually see

• The white rhino - the managed population that is the park's main draw.
• The miombo woodland - forty square kilometres of fenced bush on the city edge.
• The plains game - zebra, giraffe, eland and antelope stocked into the park.
• The proximity - a park half an hour from central Lusaka.

When to go

May to October is dry with better visibility and easier tracks. The rains thicken the bush considerably. Early morning is best for game.

Honest expectations

This is a small stocked park, not wilderness, and predators are absent. Facilities are limited to a picnic area and basic tracks. Serious game viewing means going to Kafue or Luangwa.
