Nukuhifala Islet

Nukuhifala sits on the eastern side of the Wallis lagoon, a small uninhabited islet of sand and coconut with reef around it, close enough to the main island that the crossing is short. Like the other lagoon islets it is used for day trips rather than anything else, and the water around it is shallow and clear enough to snorkel straight off the beach. The eastern rim of the lagoon carries several such islets and boats work between them.

What you actually see

• The short crossing - the islet nearest the eastern shore of Wallis.
• The reef - the coral around the islet, snorkelled from the sand.
• The coconut - the palms over the low sandy ground.
• The clear shallows - the lagoon water on the inner side.

When to go

May to October is the drier and calmer season. Boat trips depend on lagoon conditions. November to April is the cyclone season.

Honest expectations

There are no facilities and everything must be carried. The islet is very small and there is not a great deal to do beyond swim. Boats must be arranged locally.
