Long Bien Bridge

Long Bien was completed in 1902 by a French engineering firm and was for a time one of the longest bridges in Asia. It carries a single rail line down the middle, with narrow strips for motorbikes and pedestrians on either side that run in the opposite direction to normal Vietnamese traffic. Several spans were rebuilt after damage later in the twentieth century, so the profile changes as you walk and the original curved cantilever trusses give way to plain replacements. Below, on the sandbank in midstream, farmers work banana plots and vegetable beds that flood every summer. This is working infrastructure rather than a monument: rusty, loud and much photographed at sunset.

• The mismatched spans - original curved trusses beside flat replacement sections added decades later.
• The walkway - a narrow raised path along the edge, with gaps in the decking and the river below.
• Bai Giua - the midstream sandbank of banana groves and vegetable plots, reached by a track down from the bridge.
• Passing trains - the line is still in use, and the whole structure shakes when one crosses.

When to go

Late afternoon into sunset is when the light works and when locals come out to lean on the railings, though it is also the busiest hour for motorbikes. October to April is dry and cool, while summer brings haze and heat off the steel. The bridge is open at all hours, but the decking is uneven and badly lit after dark.

Practical notes

This is not a restored landmark. The steel is rusting, the walkway is littered and narrow, and motorbikes pass close enough to brush a bag. Traffic noise makes conversation hard and the river is usually a flat brown. Photographers cluster at the same two points near the Hanoi end, so the sunset view is rarely yours alone.
