The springs at Kim Boi in Hoa Binh rise at around thirty-four to thirty-six degrees, mineralised and reported as drinkable, and they were developed from the 1960s into a sanatorium and rest complex - the model of the period, medical rather than leisure - which has since been joined by newer resorts along the valley. It is the nearest thermal water to Hanoi, which is what fills it at weekends. The surrounding district is Muong country with stilt house villages and terraced fields, and it sits on the road between Hanoi and Mai Chau, so it works as a stop on that route.
