Ham Rong Mountain

Ham Rong - dragon's jaw - is the limestone hill immediately above Sapa town, laid out from the 1990s as a garden climbing its slope: orchid houses, flower beds, cut rock formations with names, tunnels and stairs through the karst, and viewing platforms at the top from which Sapa lays out below and Fansipan stands opposite when the cloud allows. It is unashamedly a municipal garden rather than a natural site, complete with costumed photo opportunities and piped music, which some visitors enjoy and others find at odds with the mountains around it.

March to May and September to November. Half a day.

Practical notes

The view depends entirely on cloud, which sits on Sapa a great deal. The climb is a long stair. The presentation is theme-park in places. Entry is charged and Sapa is expensive generally.
