Bau Trang is a pair of freshwater lakes - Bau Ong and Bau Ba, the male and female lakes - lying among sand dunes north of Mui Ne, and the combination is the point: open water covered in lotus in season, surrounded by white and red sand hills with nothing green on them. The white dunes are the larger field and are used for quad bikes and jeep tours from Mui Ne, which is the standard way visitors arrive. The lakes are shallow and are used by local farmers; the lotus flowers in early summer. Wind moves the dunes constantly, so their shape changes between visits.

Honest expectations
Quad bikes and jeeps dominate the dunes and are noisy and intrusive. Touts at the site are persistent. There is no shade at all and the sand is very hot. Litter is a problem in places.
