Bai Tu Long is the continuation of the same drowned karst plateau north-east of Ha Long, with hundreds of limestone islands, and geologically there is no difference between them - the line is administrative. It sits outside the World Heritage property, which was extended in 2023 to take in Cat Ba to the south-west rather than Bai Tu Long, and it takes far fewer boats as a result. Bai Tu Long national park covers part of it, protecting forest on the larger islands along with the marine area. Quan Lan and Co To islands, with real sand beaches, are out this way.

What you actually see

  • The same karst as Ha Long - hundreds of limestone islands.
  • Outside the inscription - the 2023 extension went to Cat Ba instead.
  • Far fewer boats - the practical consequence.
  • A national park on the islands - forest and marine area protected.

When to go

October to April; summer brings heat and storms. Two days.

Honest expectations

Boat options are fewer and less organised than at Ha Long. Some operators sell Ha Long trips that only skirt this bay. Weather cancels sailings. Facilities on the islands are limited.

Nearby

Quan Lan and Co To are further out; Ha Long is south-west.
