Playa Medina is a horseshoe bay on the northern Paria coast, a curve of pale sand a few hundred metres long enclosed by green headlands with a dense stand of coconut palms behind it, and it is regularly named the most beautiful beach in the country. It is reached down a rough track from the coast road, has cabins behind the palms and a few food stalls, and there is very little else, which is the reason people come.
What you actually see
- The horseshoe bay - a curve of pale sand between two green headlands.
- The coconut grove - a dense palm stand running back from the beach.
- The clear water - sheltered swimming inside the arms of the bay.
- The cabins - simple accommodation among the palms behind the sand.
When to go
December to April is driest and calmest. Holiday periods fill the beach and the cabins. Swell picks up in the wetter months.
Honest expectations
The access track is rough and needs care in a low car. Facilities are minimal and cabins must be booked ahead. Holiday weekends bring crowds that overwhelm the small bay.

Rio Caribe is west, and the Paria Peninsula runs east.
