Conchillas

Conchillas was founded on 24 October 1887 by the English contractor Thomas A. Walker, whose firm, C.H. Walker and Company after his death in 1889, quarried stone and dredged sand here to ship across the river for the new docks of Buenos Aires. The company laid out the village to its own plan: brick and stone cottages with corrugated roofs, the large warehouse and shop of Casa Evans, two cemeteries and an Anglican church, most of it still standing and lived in.

When to go

Year round; the village is small and always accessible. Weekends bring more visitors. Winter on the river is damp and windy.

Good to know

The village is tiny and an hour covers it. Interpretation is limited to a few plaques. Some buildings are in poor repair.
