Bokspits

Bokspits sits in the extreme southwestern corner of Botswana where the dry Molopo and Nossob riverbeds meet, in country of tall red dunes running in parallel lines. It is a small farming and herding village on the South African border, and community tourism projects here offer dune walks, donkey cart rides and overnight stays with families. The scale and the colour of the dunes, and the almost complete absence of anyone else, are what the visit is about.

When to go

April to September is the most comfortable. Summer heat regularly exceeds forty degrees and winter nights are below freezing. The riverbeds run only after exceptional rain.

Honest expectations

There is almost no infrastructure and arrangements must be made in advance through the community projects. Fuel and supplies come from Tsabong, a long drive east. Roads are sand and a four-wheel drive is the sensible choice.
