Universal Orlando Resort

Universal Orlando is the thrill-forward alternative to Disney, a resort of two linked theme parks, Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, built around film and television worlds. Its standout is the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, split across both parks and linked by the Hogwarts Express, an immersive recreation that draws fans from everywhere.

Background

The resort grew out of Universal Studios Florida, which opened on June 7, 1990, and now spans 1,291 acres with eleven resort hotels. Islands of Adventure opened on May 28, 1999 with six themed islands, among them Seuss Landing, Jurassic Park and Toon Lagoon, and the CityWalk shopping and nightlife district arrived the same year. For a short time the complex was called Universal Studios Escape, until the present name was adopted in July 2000. Volcano Bay, a water park of 30 acres, followed in 2017, and Universal Epic Universe opened on May 22, 2025 with five worlds, including Super Nintendo World and Celestial Park. Water taxis, buses and moving walkways connect the hotels and parks.

Spring and autumn for milder weather and thinner crowds; summer is hot, humid and busy, holidays packed. A new third park is opening, adding to the resort.

Things to know

It is expensive and busy, with ticket tiers and paid Express passes to skip lines. The rides lean to thrills, so it suits older children and adults more than the very young. Summer heat and storms are a factor.

Walt Disney World is nearby; the Kennedy Space Center and the Florida beaches are within reach.
