Storm King Art Center

Storm King opened in 1960 and grew into about five hundred acres of meadow, hill and woodland used as a single setting for sculpture at a scale galleries cannot take. Many works were made for their locations: Maya Lin's Storm King Wavefield of 2009 is seven long rows of earth waves; Richard Serra's Schunnemunk Fork runs four steel plates across a hillside so the ground reads differently as you walk it; Andy Goldsworthy's Storm King Wall snakes through trees and into a pond. Calder, di Suvero, Noguchi and Nevelson are all here. Distances are long - there are trolley rides, and bicycles can be hired.

May to November; closed for winter. Half a day.

Before you go

Tickets are timed and must be booked - it sells out on autumn weekends. The site is huge and involves serious walking; the tram does not reach everything. There is almost no shade or shelter. It closes entirely in winter.
