Space Needle

The Space Needle was built in under a year for the 1962 World's Fair as a sketch of the future - a 605-foot tower topped by a flying saucer - and it aged into something better: the permanent emblem of Seattle. A 2018 renovation opened the saucer up spectacularly, replacing walls and barriers with floor-to-ceiling glass, tilting glass benches on the open-air deck that lean you out over the city, and one level down The Loupe, a rotating glass floor that puts the elevators, struts and 500 feet of empty air directly beneath your shoes. The views do the rest of the work: Elliott Bay and Puget Sound streaked with ferries, the downtown towers, the Olympic range west, the Cascades east and, on clear days, Mount Rainier floating improbably over the whole arrangement. The monorail - a fellow 1962 survivor - still shuttles in from downtown.

When to go

May to September gives the best odds of the full mountain panorama; book the sunset slot and watch the city light up. Grey-season visits gamble on cloud - check the sky before committing.

Honest expectations

Tickets are steep for a view - pushing 40 to 50 dollars at peak - and clouds refund nothing, so buy on a clear forecast. Queues stack up at midday in summer; Chihuly Garden and Glass next door pairs well and comboed tickets soften the total.
