Six lakes connect through short rivers here at around five hundred metres in the western Maine mountains, and the fishing made the region's reputation: brook trout and landlocked salmon drew sportsmen from the cities by rail and stage from the 1860s, and the classic Rangeley boat, a double-ended rowing craft designed for these waters, dates from that period. Height of Land on Route 17 is a pull-off with an open view over Mooselookmeguntic and the mountains beyond, and the Appalachian Trail crosses nearby. The area sits under low light pollution and has been recognised for dark skies. Winter brings snowmobiling on a large trail network and a small ski area at Saddleback.

Honest expectations
Black flies in early summer are severe. Services are limited and seasonal. Winters are long and roads can be difficult. It is a long drive from any city.
