Mammoth Cave National Park

Mammoth Cave earns its name honestly: more than 400 miles of surveyed passages twist beneath the Kentucky hill country, making it the longest known cave system in the world by an enormous margin - and surveyors keep adding miles. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981, the cave shows its scale in chambers like the Rotunda and the long, echoing avenues of the Historic Tour, where saltpeter works and century-old signatures record two hundred years of visitors. Other routes trade scale for decoration - Frozen Niagara drips with flowstone and stalactites - or for adventure, squeezing through Fat Man's Misery by lantern light. Above ground the park keeps a green world of its own: the Green River loops through hardwood forest, trails and sinkholes pock the karst plateau, and the whole system still breathes cool 54-degree air from its historic entrance.

The cave sits at 54F all year, so any season works underground - bring a layer. Summer and holiday tours sell out days or weeks ahead; winter offers the same cave with a fraction of the company.

Honest expectations

You cannot wander in on your own - everything below ground is a ranger-led tour, and the popular ones book out, so reserve before you drive. Tours involve hundreds of stairs and long standing stretches, and the celebrated chambers are grand rather than pretty - go for scale and history, not glitter.
