Tham Lot Cave

At Ban Tham near Soppong, the Nam Lang river disappears into a limestone hill and runs underground for over a kilometre before coming out the other side. Visitors follow it with a hired guide carrying a pressure lantern, walking the dry sections and crossing the water on bamboo rafts poled by local boatmen. Three chambers open off the passage: one with a huge column, one with formations named for dolls, and one high above the river holding hollowed teak log coffins left by people who lived here long before the villages nearby. At dusk the entrance becomes the main event, when swifts pour in by the hundred thousand while bats stream out past them in the opposite direction.

• Coffin Cave - hollowed teak logs on a ledge above the water, roped off.
• Column Cave - a single massive formation picked out by lantern light.
• The dusk swift return - a dense spiral of birds entering as the bats leave.

When to go

The cool dry season from November to February is the safe window; heavy rain raises the river and rangers close the raft sections, sometimes for days at a time. Arrive by late afternoon to see the chambers and still be at the mouth for the swifts around dusk. Guides and rafts are hired at the entrance and are not optional extras.

Honest expectations

Costs stack up: a guide fee, then a separate raft charge per section, then park entry. The lantern is dim by design, so most photographs fail. Bamboo ladders and wet limestone are slippery, the guano smell is strong, and guides move quickly with limited English. After rain the route inside can be cut short with no reduction in price.
