The lake covers around 500 square kilometres, which makes it the largest natural freshwater lake in the western United States by surface area, and it is a remnant of a much larger glacial lake. The southern half lies within the Flathead Indian Reservation of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, and fishing or recreating there requires a tribal permit rather than a state licence - a distinction visitors regularly get wrong. Cherry orchards line the eastern shore, kept from frost by the lake's thermal mass, with a short harvest in late July. Wild Horse Island, a state park in the lake, holds bighorn sheep and a few feral horses and is reachable only by boat.

What you actually see

  • Around 500 square kilometres - the largest natural freshwater lake in the west.
  • Cherry orchards on the east shore - harvested in late July.
  • Tribal jurisdiction over the southern half - requiring tribal permits.
  • Wild Horse Island - bighorn sheep, boat access only.

When to go

June to September; cherries in late July. A full day.

Honest expectations

Permits differ by which half of the lake you are on - get the right one. The water stays cold through summer. Public access points are limited; much of the shore is private. Wildfire smoke affects some late summers.

Nearby

Glacier National Park is north; the Mission Mountains rise east.
