Fort Christian

Fort Christian has anchored Charlotte Amalie since the 1670s - the Danish colony's founding stronghold and the territory's oldest standing structure, its brick-red walls serving across the centuries as fort, governor's residence, church, police station and jail before restoration returned it as museum. The battlements survey the harbour that made St Thomas the Caribbean's trading crossroads, galleries walk the Danish era's history - the enslaved majority's story given its due place - and the clock tower's Victorian addition keeps the waterfront's most photographed face. It roots the shopping-port city in its actual past.

Background

Work on the fort ran from 1672 to 1680, and it carries the name of King Christian V. It was enlarged in the 18th century, and 1874 brought a new entrance topped by a Victorian clock tower. The central tower came down in the 19th century, and the Gothic Revival structure seen now took its place. Three curtain walls and the four bastions survive, along with living quarters built against those walls. Between December 24, 1960 and February 5, 1975 the 1.92-acre site was a National Historic Site. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1977 and is part of the Charlotte Amalie Historic District. Reopened in 2017 after a decade of renovation, it houses the St. Thomas Museum.
