The Giant's Causeway

The Giant's Causeway is the natural wonder of Northern Ireland, some forty thousand interlocking columns of dark basalt, mostly hexagonal, stepping down into the sea on the wild Antrim coast. Formed by an ancient volcanic eruption that cooled and cracked into these astonishing geometric pillars, it is wrapped in the legend of the giant Finn McCool, and its dramatic coastline makes it a UNESCO wonder.

When to go

Late spring to early autumn for the best weather and long days; the exposed coast is windswept and often wet, so pack for changeable weather any time. Go early or late to avoid the tour-bus crowds and to catch the best light.

Things to know

It is very popular, so the site and car park get busy with tour buses by midday; go early or late. The stones themselves are compact, reached by a walk or shuttle down from the visitor centre, whose parking and exhibition charge. The exposed coast is often wet and windy.
