Al Sadu Weaving

Al Sadu is the weaving of the Bedouin household: sheep wool, camel and goat hair, spun by hand, dyed and worked on a ground loom pegged out on the sand, producing tent panels, dividers, camel trappings and cushions in narrow bands of geometric pattern. Colours are traditionally black, white, brown and red, and the motifs carry names and meanings passed between women. UNESCO first listed the skills as in need of urgent safeguarding in 2011, and in 2025 moved them to its Representative List along with a safeguarding programme.

When to go

October to April is when heritage festivals and craft demonstrations run. Workshops at heritage centres operate through the cooler months. Weaving demonstrations are common at national day and Ramadan events.

Practical notes

Demonstrations are seasonal and often tied to festivals rather than being permanently available. Much sold as Sadu in souks is machine-made imitation. Genuine handwoven pieces are expensive and slow to produce.
