Al Rafisah Dam

Al Rafisah is a water storage dam in a bowl of bare Hajar rock a short way inland from Khorfakkan, and the still green water against the grey mountain is the reason it has been developed for visitors. A lakeside park was laid out with walking paths, a cafe, a small aquarium of local fish and pedal boats for hire, and the surrounding peaks give walking routes for the fit. It fills after winter rain and can drop a long way in a dry year.

What you actually see

• The reservoir - green water held in a bowl of bare Hajar rock.
• The lakeside park - paths, shaded seating and a cafe along the shore.
• The pedal boats - hire boats on the water in season.
• The mountain walls - the steep rock rising directly from the shoreline.

When to go

October to April; the water is highest after winter rain. Summer heat here is severe with no shade on the slopes. Weekends bring family crowds.

Honest expectations

Water levels fall in dry years and the lake can look poor. Swimming is not permitted as it is a water supply. There is little to do beyond walking and the boats.
