Poltava

Poltava was rebuilt in the early nineteenth century around a circular square with a column at its centre and eight neoclassical buildings radiating from it, one of the most complete Empire-style ensembles in Ukraine. Ivan Kotliarevsky, who wrote the first work of modern Ukrainian literature here, has a house museum and a monument. The city is also associated with halushky, and a monument to the dumpling stands near the centre, a bronze bowl on a plinth that visitors photograph and locals largely ignore.

Background

Poltava stands on the Vorskla River and is the administrative centre of Poltava Oblast. The city covers 103 square kilometres in 3 districts and had an estimated 279,593 people in 2022. Its founding date is unknown. The settlement of Ltava, linked by tradition to the present name, appears in the Hypatian Chronicle in 1174, and the name Poltava has been in use since 1430. The city celebrated its 800th anniversary in 1974 and its 1100th in 1999. From the late 18th century it grew into a major cultural centre. Known for its parks, it has a reputation as one of the greenest cities in Ukraine.

April to October is the comfortable season. Museums close on Mondays. Chestnuts and lilac make late spring the prettiest.
