Baturyn

Baturyn was the seat of the Cossack hetmans through the later seventeenth century and into the eighteenth, and the wooden citadel above the Seim was the centre of it. Nothing original survives; what stands is a reconstruction completed in 2009 with a timber fort, church and residence on the excavated site. A short distance away is the palace built for Kyrylo Rozumovsky in the 1790s, a large neoclassical house by Charles Cameron, restored and furnished.

Background

Baturyn stands on the banks of the Seym in Nizhyn Raion, Chernihiv Oblast, and its population was estimated at 2,406 in 2022. Finds at the site include traces of a 9th to 10th century settlement and a fortified hilltop stronghold of the 11th to 13th centuries. Matwiej Stachurski founded the present town and fortress in 1625. In the time of Hetman Ivan Mazepa, from 1687 to 1708, the town grew to upwards of 20,000 residents and had two monasteries and 40 churches and chapels. Today Baturyn is home to the Hetman's Capital, a historical and cultural reserve.

When to go

April to October is the comfortable season. The reserve sites keep set hours and close on Mondays. Summer brings historical festivals to the citadel.

Good to know

The citadel is entirely modern reconstruction and reads that way. The palace and the fort are a walk apart. Labelling is in Ukrainian.
