Kisiizi Falls

Kisiizi Falls drops about thirty metres into a gorge in the hills of southwestern Uganda, beside a mission hospital founded in 1958 that has used the falls to generate its own electricity since the 1960s. A walkway and viewing platform run along the gorge, and there is a zip line across it. The falls carry a grim local history: unmarried pregnant girls were thrown from the top by their families until the practice was ended in the twentieth century.

When to go

June to September and December to February are drier for the roads. The rains give the strongest flow. Mornings are best before afternoon cloud.

Practical notes

The roads in the southwest are rough and the drive is long. The site is modest and the visit short. The history attached to the falls is disturbing and is presented on site.
