The Thursday Fish Fry

The Island Fish Fry runs on Thursday evenings at Bight Park in the middle of the Grace Bay strip, and it exists to put local food, music and craft in front of visitors who would otherwise never leave their resorts. Stalls sell cracked conch, fried snapper, jerk chicken, peas and hominy, johnny cake and rum punch, a ripsaw band plays, and a junkanoo group parades through with drums and costume. It is organised rather than spontaneous, which is fair enough, and it is the easiest way for a visitor to eat local food and hear local music in one evening.

When to go

Thursday evenings from around five o'clock, year-round, though it runs on a reduced schedule in the quietest months. Go early for the food, since the popular stalls sell out.

Honest expectations

It is an organised event aimed largely at visitors rather than an organic local gathering, and it feels like one. Prices are higher than at a beach shack in Blue Hills. It is busy and the seating is limited. It runs weekly but has been suspended in low season and after storms.
