Istanbul Modern

The museum opened in 2004 in a converted warehouse on this quay and reopened in 2023 in a new building by Renzo Piano, a stack of glass and aluminium with a shallow pool on the roof that mirrors the sky. The collection is the useful part: Turkish painting and sculpture from the late Ottoman academy through the twentieth century, a photography gallery that runs seriously long retrospectives, and temporary shows of contemporary work from Turkey and abroad. It is the clearest place in the city to follow how Turkish artists worked their way through modernism, and the roof terrace over the strait comes without the drink minimum you pay elsewhere.

• The roof terrace and pool - a shallow reflecting sheet above the strait and the old city.
• Temporary exhibitions - contemporary work rotated through the upper floors.

When to go

Year-round, and a good rainy-day option in winter. Late afternoon puts you on the roof for the light going down over Sultanahmet. The museum closes one day a week and the terrace shuts in high wind, so check on the day. Cruise ships berth alongside and the quay gets busy when one is in.

Honest expectations

The building attracts more attention than much of what hangs in it, and the permanent display is smaller than the floor area suggests. Ticket prices have risen steeply. Galataport around it is a polished shopping quay with little of old Karakoy left. Expect a queue for the roof at sunset and a busy cafe at any hour.
