Istanbul Archaeology Museums

The museums grew out of the excavations of Osman Hamdi Bey, the painter and archaeologist who dug the royal necropolis at Sidon in 1887 and brought its sarcophagi back to a purpose-built hall. The Alexander Sarcophagus is the centrepiece: a marble chest carved with dense figure friezes, with traces of the original paint still visible on the stone. Around it stand the Sarcophagus of the Mourning Women and Lycian tombs from the same dig. Two more buildings complete the set, the Museum of the Ancient Orient with Mesopotamian and Egyptian material, and the Tiled Kiosk of 1472, lined with early Iznik and Kutahya tilework.

• The Alexander Sarcophagus - fourth-century BC marble with paint traces still on the carving.
• The Sidon necropolis group - the Mourning Women sarcophagus and its neighbours from one dig.
• The Museum of the Ancient Orient - Mesopotamian, Egyptian and pre-Islamic Arabian collections.
• The Tiled Kiosk - a pavilion of 1472 in the palace grounds, now a tile gallery.

When to go

Open year-round and rarely as busy as Topkapi next door, which makes it a good afternoon when the queues outside Hagia Sophia are unmanageable. Mornings are quietest. The closing day varies, so check before crossing the city, and allow extra time if you also want Gulhane Park below the terrace.

Honest expectations

The main building has spent years in phases of restoration and galleries close without warning, so what you see depends on the month. Labelling is thin and sometimes only in Turkish. The Ancient Orient wing is small for the ticket price if the main halls are shut. Ask at the desk what is open before paying.
